RENKEI Project Sub Theme 5 - Evaluation and Collaboration with Users - Goal †To enable e-Science communities, we make bridges between scientists who research on e-Science infrastructure systems/services and who research on application areas, including HEP and bio, that potentially require cyber-collaboration. To achieve this goal, we will build a distributed computing environment that includes supercomputers from computer centers and shared data storages which are accessible from these supercomputers. e-Science system researchers develop/test/deploy their systems/services on the environment and application area researchers use them to proceed their research. We also provide a communication space between these two type researchers to apply feedbacks from researchers who use systems/services to the e-Science systems/services. Proposal - RENKEI-PoP †We propose an appliance for e-Science environment and named it RENKEI-PoP (Point of Presence). RENKEI is an abbreviation of "REsources liNKage for E-scIence" and means "federation" in Japanese. A RENKEI-PoP is just a storage server which has a large amount of data storage, high speed network interfaces, and a support for running VMs on it. Its software is open source softwares, including linux kernel, kvm, libvirt, gfarm, globus, etc. RENKEI-PoPs are installed in computer centers in universities and research institutes (NIS, national infrastructure system, resources) as a gateway server, and tightly connected with local resources and loosely connected with each other over the Internet or VPN for specific research projects to form a distributed computing environment. Here 'tightly' means that RENKEI-PoPs use the same network or authentication system with local resources, such as supercomputers and data storages, and 'loosely' means that they are on the same grid infrastructure. ![]() A RENKEI-PoP distributed computing environment
